Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline
Most patients return to light daily activities in 3–5 days, office work in 1 week, full upper-body exercise at 6 weeks. Final shape settles at 6–12 months. The drop-and-fluff phase (weeks 4–8) is universal — implants look high before they settle naturally.
Breast augmentation recovery is faster than most patients expect — particularly with modern drain-free, subfascial or dual plane technique. Day 1: hospital observation, mild discomfort managed with paracetamol. Days 3–5: most patients return to light daily activities. Week 1: office work resumes. Week 4–6: surgical bra removed, strenuous exercise resumes. Months 3–6: implants 'drop and fluff' into final position. Final shape settles at 6–12 months. Surgical bra adherence (4–6 weeks continuous) and activity restriction adherence are the two most patient-controllable variables in result quality.
Understanding the recovery process helps you plan your trip to Istanbul and set realistic expectations. Dr. Erdal's no-drain surgical technique significantly improves post-operative comfort. Here is a detailed week-by-week recovery guide.
Day 0 — Surgery day
Breast augmentation takes approximately 60–90 minutes under general anaesthesia. You wake up wearing a surgical compression bra. Most patients spend one night in hospital for comfort and monitoring. Mild soreness, tightness and swelling are normal.
Days 1–3 — Early recovery
You return to your hotel (Antwell Suites) the morning after surgery. Daily follow-up appointments are conducted at the hotel's ground-floor clinic. Most patients feel well enough to walk, eat normally and manage basic self-care. Because Dr. Erdal uses a no-drain technique, there are no tubes to manage — making this phase significantly more comfortable.
- Mild to moderate soreness — managed with prescribed medication
- Swelling and tightness in the chest — this is normal and expected
- Implants sit high initially — they will settle over the coming weeks
- Wear your surgical bra continuously (provided free of charge)
Days 4–5 — Flying home
Most patients fly home comfortably on day 4–5 after a final check-up with Dr. Erdal. You receive detailed aftercare instructions, medical tapes and guidance for your home recovery. If you'd like to stay longer and explore Istanbul, you are warmly encouraged to do so.
Week 1–2 — Home recovery
Light daily activities can usually be resumed within the first week. Office work and non-physical jobs are typically manageable from day 5–7. Avoid lifting anything heavier than 2–3 kg. Sleeping on your back (slightly elevated) is recommended.
Week 3–4 — Gradual return to normal
Swelling continues to reduce noticeably. Most patients feel significantly more comfortable and begin to see the emerging shape of their result. Light walking and gentle lower-body exercise may be resumed with Dr. Erdal's approval. The surgical bra should still be worn as directed.
Week 6 — Returning to exercise
At approximately 6 weeks, most patients are cleared for full physical activity, including gym workouts, running and upper-body exercise. The surgical bra can typically be replaced with a normal supportive bra at this point.
Month 3–6 — Settling into shape
The implants continue to "drop and fluff" — settling into their final position as the lower pole fills out and the upper pole softens. Swelling resolves further and the breast shape becomes increasingly natural. Photo follow-up with Dr. Erdal is scheduled at 3 months.
Month 6–12 — Final result
By 6–12 months, the vast majority of swelling has resolved and the implants have fully settled. The final shape, softness and position are established. A 1-year photo follow-up with Dr. Erdal completes the formal follow-up schedule, although WhatsApp support remains available indefinitely.
No-drain advantage: Because Dr. Erdal performs breast augmentation without suction drains, patients experience no tube-related discomfort, no drain removal appointments and a smoother, more comfortable recovery from day one.

Most patients return to light daily activities within 3–5 days. Office work resumes around day 7. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are restricted for 4–6 weeks. The surgical bra is worn continuously for 4–6 weeks. Final breast shape settles at 6–12 months as oedema resolves and implants 'drop and fluff' into their final position.
Less painful than most patients anticipate, particularly with subfascial or dual plane technique and drain-free protocol. Pain peaks in the first 24–48 hours and is well-managed with paracetamol; opioid analgesics are rarely needed beyond day 1. By day 3–4, most patients describe sensation as tightness or pressure rather than pain. Submuscular placement can produce more initial discomfort than subfascial; this resolves over the first week.
Light walking from day 1. Gentle stretching and daily activities from day 5. Light cardio (stationary bike, treadmill walking) from week 3. Full cardio (running, cycling) from week 4. Upper-body resistance training (chest press, push-ups, weights) restricted until week 6 minimum. Premature return to upper-body resistance work is the most common patient-side cause of suboptimal contour and is to be strictly avoided.
Side sleeping is generally permitted from week 2, with a pillow supporting the chest if more comfortable. Stomach sleeping is restricted for 4–6 weeks while implants settle into pocket. Most patients sleep on their back with elevation for the first 2 weeks, then transition to side sleeping. Stomach sleeping resumes when comfortable, usually around week 6.
